A Lot Going On for the HEAT TRANSITION Team!

Numerous municipalities are turning to greenwind with confidence when it comes to municipal heat planning (KWP). The administrative districts of Barnim-Oderbruch, Meyenburg and Breitenfelde, as well as the city of Mansfeld, have recently chosen greenwind for their planning projects. Site development concepts for renewable energy generation facilities and feasibility studies for district heating networks, for example in Mansfeld and Siebeneichen, are currently being developed. With professional planning by greenwind, municipal heat planning has already been successfully completed for the municipalities of Mansfeld, Schorfheide, Falkenberg/Elster and Brieselang.

In municipal heat planning, we place great emphasis on involving local stakeholders. In Brieselang, these included, among others, the neighboring municipalities of Wustermark and Nauen, the housing cooperative, the citizens’ representatives, and the planned data center. To what extent has this approach been successful? We asked Brieselang Mayor Kathrin Neumann-Riedel:

Mayor Neumann-Riedel: The workshops provided an excellent opportunity to bring all the stakeholders involved to the table and establish a constructive starting point for addressing the issue. At the same time, participants had the opportunity to raise their concerns and contribute their suggestions comprehensively.

What are the specific next steps?

Mayor: Against the backdrop of rising energy costs, a climate-neutral heat supply is a key element of this planning process. First, a feasibility study for a district heating network needs to be commissioned. Strategies for investment models must be developed and partners recruited. Heat planning must be continuously updated. This task falls within the remit of municipal development.

What recommendations would you give to other municipalities?

Mayor: I would advise other municipalities not to view municipal heat planning as an annoying mandatory task, but rather as an opportunity to actively and sustainably shape the transition to renewable and climate-neutral heating.

Digital Twin for the Administrative Districts

To support the ongoing updating of heat plans, greenwind provides its clients with an interactive map, programmed by our colleague Christopher Curran. This digital twin contains extensive information on every building within the area under consideration, including building geometry and energy supply data. It is a valuable tool, for example, for spatial planning, calculating heat demand, or identifying the potential for wind and solar energy, as well as for the use of water bodies and geothermal energy.

The digital twin can be used for purposes extending well beyond municipal heat planning. For example, it can support the preparation of land-use plans, integrated neighborhood development concepts, or feasibility studies. greenwind relies on an open-source solution with no licensing costs.
