Kilian Fromm: Green energy for industry and heavy goods traffic

Kilian Fromm is taking over the management of greenwind’s innovation division with immediate effect, having played a key role in its development and expansion from the outset. As an independent part of the greenwind Group, he and his team are committed to the development of integrated energy systems. The central topics here are hybrid projects, the heating transition and supplying industrial companies with green energy. He takes over the management from greenwind founder Manuel Lasse, who is devoting more time to the strategic direction of the entire greenwind Group. We ask:

Kilian, with which idea did you join us five years ago?

To this day, what drives me is the full energy transformation, in which the generation of green electricity is the first step. All further steps, especially in the sectors beyond pure electricity generation, will change significantly in a few years. These are challenges that we will use as an opportunity for the entire greenwind Group.

Which aspects do you want to emphasise?

We are already working closely with our project development department for wind turbines and photovoltaics. It is important to me that we continue to optimise the existing interfaces: organisation of grid connections, building application procedures for substations, PV and the complementary BESS, local energy issues that arise early on in project development on site and can be solved by future-oriented solutions with storage and heat. We always keep the changing market conditions in mind and attach great importance to involving local people in our projects.

What are the current projects at Green Wind Innovation?

We are currently finalising a number of municipal heating plans, for example in the municipality of Falkenberg/Elster. At the same time, we are launching new municipal heat planning projects such as in Meyenburg and Breitenfelde. However, we are also examining the feasibility of local heating networks, currently in a municipality in eastern Schleswig-Holstein. In our hybrid projects, or co-location projects, we integrate flexible loads, primarily BESS at the same grid connection point, alongside the existing RE projects. We process the returns from projects in the planning permission process, deal with the ever-changing planning law issues of approvability for other projects and coordinate with local approval authorities.

Where do you see the focus of your work in 2026?

The entire renewable energy sector in Germany is looking forward to the changes that will be made to the Renewable Energy Sources Act and the Energy Industry Act. We are prepared to follow the path called for by the German government – towards cost efficiency and further market integration by making renewables more flexible. We are pushing forward direct cooperation with industrial customers but will also harness the local potential of renewable electricity in the heating sector.

What role does green hydrogen play in this?

In concrete terms, we are developing a decentralised electrolyser as part of the overall TH2ECO project in Thuringia and want to work with partners to put hydrogen on the road for heavy goods vehicles. As things stand today, this is where I see the greatest potential for economical electrolyser operation.

How will your team be structured to master the various challenges?

From technical challenges, planning regulations and changing regulatory requirements to political developments and bringing together different stakeholders, the tasks are different every day. That is why our team is already structured in such a way that it works closely with local people and has a broad thematic focus. We maintain close contacts with various universities and colleges and supervise theses. We work proactively. In return, greenwind always provides a supporting leap of faith.

What has your career path been like at greenwind?

It all started with an internship at the end of my bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. Then, in parallel to my master’s degree, I was able to take a lot of knowledge from classic project development at Wind and apply it to my first own sector coupling projects. I’ve been with the company full-time since 2022 and have been able to build up the team and sharpen our focus at the same time. Now I’m here and looking forward to what’s coming.
