A done deal! Municipal heat planning gets Mansfeld’s heat transition rolling

The greenwind* MHP team has conceived the municipal heat planning for the unified municipality of Mansfeld in Saxony-Anhalt. The city council has recently approved the plans by a majority. This was immediately followed by the fundamental resolution to review the local school’s heat supply based on local biomass, which is currently transported up to 200 km to customers throughout Germany. This project idea is directly based on municipal heat planning.

Project manager Jacob Fengler (right) handed over the heating plan together with a customised thermos flask to Mayor Andreas Koch and head of the building authority Carina Senft, who is in charge of municipal heat planning.

In Mansfeld, a comparatively large amount of biomass is produced as a result of ordinary forest management and the cutting back of plants (especially along roads). Within its potential analysis, greenwind balanced only biomass from waste, wood waste or other legally defined categories that occur within the administrative area of the municipality.

In concrete terms, the aim is to supply the school with energy using wood-based biomass combustion in a combined heat and power plant (CHP), for which an economic and technical concept is due to be presented. The unanimous fundamental resolution clearly demonstrates the city council’s interest in this circular economy project idea. Final decisions will be taken as soon as financing, prices, location etc. have been determined. A local company which was involved in the municipal heat planning and could be considered as the future operator of the CHP unit is now in charge for preparations.
